How much is the puppy in the window?

I hear it all the time. "I found the same breed for half the price."

You did. And you didn't….

That lower price didn't include OFA hips and elbows, cardiac and eye clearances, genetic panels. Titles in the field and ring. Proving themselves, generation after generation.

It didn't include the female who was retired early because she wasn't breeding quality. It didn't include the stud fee to the right male across the country instead of the convenient male down the road. It didn't include the puppy culture, the vet checks, the shots, the microchips, the hours of exposure to birds, water, crates, kids.

When you buy a puppy from someone who has invested in all of that, you are paying for the best chance at a healthy, stable, trainable dog for the next 12 to 14 years.

When you buy based on price alone, you are gambling. Sometimes you get lucky. Often you get anxiety, vet bills, temperament issues, and heartbreak. The initial savings disappears very fast.

This is not just about dogs.

In life, we are all tempted by the cheaper, faster, easier option. But craftsmanship still matters. Integrity still matters. Doing things the right way when no one is watching still matters.

Good breeders aren't getting rich. They are trying to cover the cost of doing it right and maybe, just maybe, break even so they can do it again.

Good dogs cost money because good dogs cost money to produce.

Same goes for everything worth having. A good marriage. A good reputation. A good bird dog. None of them come cheap or easy. They all take time, investment, sacrifice and care.
